The Troubling Marks of Disdain

The Troubling Marks of Disdain

An Investigation of the Doctrine of Carnal Christianity

by Dr. Kevin Hartley

Introduction

"For men shall be lovers of their own selves, covetous, boasters, proud, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, unholy, without natural affection, trucebreakers, false accusers, incontinent, fierce, despisers of those that are good, traitors, heady, highminded, lovers of pleasures more than lovers of God; Having a form of godliness, but denying the power thereof (II Tim. 3:2-5a)".

Immorality, indifference, divisions, factions, heresies, and a mere semblance of love sordidly mark evangelicalism in our day. We find ourselves in a day of peril, in which it has become incumbent upon the bride of Christ to turn her attention to this debilitating infirmity. Left upon its present course, evangelicalism will soon eclipse all eras as the darkest of all ages.

The Comfort of Irresistible Grace

In the eleventh chapter of John’s gospel, where we read that Christ spoke to His disciples about Lazarus’ sickness and subsequent sleep, John notes that the disciples misunderstood the Lord, thinking Lazarus was merely asleep. It was then that John noted that Christ said to them plainly, “Lazarus is dead.” Even then the disciples would have no awareness of the true power of Christ, concluding as Thomas said, “Let us also go, that we may die with him.” Upon Christ’s arrival at Bethany, there was further evidence of the dullness of men. When Martha met Christ, He declared Himself to be the Resurrection and the life, only to have her debate with Him theologically in her own skewed awareness, concluding that the Lord could only be speaking of the final resurrection alone. She would have no thought of the Lord’s power to raise the dead immediately, even though Jesus said to her plainly, “Thy brother shall rise again.” The theology made sense to her, but not the true power and nature of Christ. When the dullards of Bethany gathered at Lazarus’ tomb to debate with Christ about rolling back Lazarus’s tombstone, it is said that the fury of Christ was as groaning. The unbelief of all those present at Lazarus’ tomb led to that most succinct of verses, “Jesus wept,” not out of pity, but out of sorrow at the prevailing disbelief of all. So let all today consider, does not the Lord still weep over the insipidness of unbelief?

The Genius of Puritan Preaching

The place and importance of preaching in the rise and decline of English Puritan piety is one of notable significance. Its place was one of centrality to the movement, while its importance was defined as vital throughout the life of the movement. As to its centrality, preaching was viewed as the means given by God for the rise of true godliness among a people. Neglect of such means would result in the consequence of the decline of holiness among a people. William Perkins, the man at the nucleus of the development of Puritan preaching, writes:
…the want of the preaching and hearing of the word is one of the great curses of God on earth (Prov. 29. 18; Amos 8. 11; Hos. 9.7)…the preaching of the word is a means to beat down the kingdom of the devil and it is the key of the kingdom of heaven (Luke 10.18; Matt. 16. 19)…it is the old ancient practice of the people of God to hear and frequent sermons (2 Kings 4.23).
The Puritans championing of the pulpit ministry was seen as prescribed by God himself. God sovereignly had provided the means for the effectual end of gospel communication in his word and was said to utilize men for the purpose of preaching to the end of the application of said means. Rising above other means of prescription the Puritan pulpit was held as the chief means to the design of piety. Thus its centrality is established.

REVELATION : Understanding The Age

Revelation: Understanding the Age is just as the title indicates: it is a biblical commentary on the book of Revelation that interprets the book as it intends to be interpreted, describing this present age, wherein the eternal will of God is being accomplished by way of the conquest of the Lamb unto judgment and salvation in the end. It is a truly "amillenial" commentary on Revelation. In the likes of Ramsey and Hendriksen, this book focuses upon the true biblical insights of Revelation. It is designed to accentuate the glory and majesty of our Christ and King in the advance of His kingdom in this present age. With the overabundance and saturation of books and commentaries available on the book of Revelation, this book stands out as one of sound, biblical exegesis, in accordance with true Reformed theology, focusing upon the design and intent of the book, as both an epistle useful for the soul, and as prophetic material intended to encourage, embolden, and find use in the furtherance of the faith of God's elect in this present last age. The book follows the biblical hermeneutic of scripture interpreting scripture. It relies upon the text and not circumstances of the day to explain the truth of the content of our Lord's final word to us in these last days. It mollifies the imagination and myths of those that have done a great disservice to the church and our Lord's kingdom by relegating most of the book's content to a future age. Here is a commentary that will rightly afford the reader with the tools and understanding necessary to put the book to its proper use today.

Defining New Covenant Theology

Lay theological discussions in our day often devolve into vitriolic and uninformed character assaults.  Often begun with good intentions, theological discussion often devolves into a most insipid and unproductive endeavor.  Whatever the issue, it is rare for two interested people to discuss a theological issue without turning the conversation into a personal assault and defamation of one another.  Attempts at dialogue often conclude in a futile stalemate where both sides end up quoting a plethora of verses as though they might out-quote the other.  In such so-called discussion, neither side gains much ground since both opponents are adept at avoiding the real issues and are quite skilled in the art of misrepresentation, rhetoric, false assumptions, red herrings, and unwarranted persecution of the opponent, degenerating the discussion into anything but dialogue.

Theological discussion today can be likened to a deployment of armies; men enlist, are armed and trained to wield a catalog of verses and retorts, and are made ready for battle.  Within the various theological camps is found little fighting, but much honing of defensive and offensive skills.  When intramural theological discussion is held, it is most often only a recounting of great battles, a presentation of verse quoting skills, and/or comparison of battle scars.  Debate rarely involves the engagement of meaningful, theological discussion.  When those of like mind are occupied in discussion, they often are able to successfully engage one another in a civil manner, yet such debate rarely ventures outside of one’s safety zone.  Generally what is discussed among those of similar belief is nothing more than a reaffirmation of what is already believed and the dislike for everyone not in agreement with them.

Christian Obedience

The Christian life can best be anticipated by that age-old question posed by Saul of Tarsus on the road to Damascus, Lord, what will you have me to do? From the moment we are raised in newness of life, until the day of our crossing the river of death, we wrestle with the nature of true Christian obedience. New covenant theology is concerned with Christian obedience, holiness, and godliness. We believe in law, in commands, in obedience, and in the process of Christian sanctification. A charge of doctrinal antinomianism is often, though wrongfully, leveled against new covenant theology. The unwarranted caricature of new covenant theology is the basis of the mandate for this book that will, hopefully, silence such unjustified criticism by showing that obedience and holiness are as essential to new covenant theology as they are to any other orthodox system of theology.

New covenant theology teaches that Christian obedience is essential to being, not to becoming, a Christian. What is new covenant Christian obedience? [It is called new covenant Christian obedience to distinguish it from the manner of obedience taught by other systems of theology.]
